Central Baptist Church: A Brief History
History
Founded October 28, 1914
Central Baptist Church of Fountain City’s ministry of worship, spiritual formation, missions and ministry began over 100 years ago, when 33 persons met on October 28, 1914, to found a new congregation. At first, the new congregation called itself Bright Hope Baptist Church, but the members changed its name to Central Baptist Church of Fountain City in 1915.

In subsequent decades, a pattern of strong, Bible-based preaching and service was set forth by church leadership. CBCFC experienced tremendous growth in membership and in the scope of its ministries, necessitating numerous construction projects, with the current sanctuary completed in 1949. The Family Life Center first opened in 1984 and has since become a hub for fitness activities, team sports, casual recreation, family gatherings, and special events. Our Youth and Children’s areas were renovated in 2016 to provide a modern, welcoming space for students to learn and grow.
Central Baptist has always had a calling to care for, nurture, and encourage children and youth. The typical programs of Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and missions education have been and continue to be a part of CBC. When a need for childcare that would help working parents was recognized, the church organized and funded what has become our current Weekday Education Program, composed of the Early Childhood Center for preschoolers and the School Age Program for after-school and summer care for children in grades K-5.
Over the years, music has played an integral role at Central Baptist. From instrumental ensembles in the 1920s to a variety of choral groups over the years, music has given people a way to serve and a way to worship. In the 1950s, a strong, graded choir program began, and a youth choir program followed shortly thereafter. The active role of music in ministry continues under the leadership of Bob Robinson, with choirs for all ages, handbells, and the use of other instruments in various styles of worship music.
Ever since the early months of Central Baptist Church, a dedication to missions has been vital, and efforts were made by a variety of groups and individuals over the years to be the hands and feet of Christ in the community, our country, and all over the world. From rebuilding Fonde Church in Kentucky, to helping victims of natural disasters rebuild and recover, to a myriad of mission trips, Christ-followers at CBCFC have willingly used their gifts, skills, and resources for others. Today, CBCFC members are encouraged to volunteer and be part of helping others in our community through a variety of ministries such as the Fountain City Ministry Center, Compassion Coalition, Family Promise, Mission of Hope, Inasmuch United Knoxville, Hearts & Hands Women’s Ministry, and other programs.
Central Baptist Church has grown in many areas over the last one hundred and ten years. There are differences from the early years ranging from size to programs to styles of worship. Yet, one characteristic is constant. The heart of CBC is loving God and paying attention to Christ’s command to love others. Whether 1914 or 2024, this love is the key in understanding CBC. Where will this love take CBC in the next 100 years?
